mutterings of a cynic

sydney, the capital of australia

I've decided to start blogging, well ranting really. Rahel got me started by producing a blog that's actually worth reading (above, below, and beyond tech talk).

So, on today's list of things to moan about:
  • Incorrectness through public opinion
While signing up to create this blog I had to enter a timezone. The dropdown was nicely split into Continent/Capital. Having passed Europe/B I continued on till Europe/Zürich. Ouch. Just because people think it's correct doesn't make it right. The worst part about it is that the more people get it wrong, the more people will think it's right.

On a related note, Microsoft Word's spell checker. I never ascertained whether or not this was vicious rumour or not, so (along with all of my other mutterings) consider them true only after researching them yourself. Some words in English are spelt with a 'z', but most with an 's' (referring to words like realise/realize etc). In American English, afaik, the equivilents are all spelt with 'z' . If the early versions of MS Word had an English spellchecker that didn't realise that some English words are spelt with a 'z' then would the world of badly spelt documents be enough to effectivly remove the word from the English language? No, probably not, but me being me, I prefer to think maybe.

Incidentally, Canberra was in the list as well as Syndey. Too critical? Me?

  • I noticed that before I started ranting, but my main beef is that things like that make people believe the wrong things. I believe that while something might not be wrong in itself, if it has potential to be understood incorrectly then it probably needs revision.
