slashdot bafta
The other day some friends were talking and one said to the other:
He was quite right, the idea is the sort of thing that will end up on slashdot someday. The conversation got me thinking about why you'de want to be on slashdot. I concluded that it's for the 5 minutes of tech / geek fame.
It's like an actor winning a bafta. They're proud of it and their friends and family recognise the achievement. Actors however who have won a more prestigious oscar, see it only as a toy award worth nothing to them.
Of course, if this blog entry is slashdotted then I'd like to thank my friends for having the conversation in the first place, Rahel for introducing me to blogging, and my family, without whom none of this would be possible.
"If you [implement some cool techie idea] then it's bound to be slashdotted"

I'm not going to claim that there's anything actually valuable about being on slashdot, just like there isn't anything implicitly valuable about being on TV or in non-tech news (although you may be able to leverage it to profitable ends). To be complete though your analogy needs to give at least an example for what an Oscar would be in comparison to your Bafta of slashdot.
Slashdot is news media that reaches over a million people. If you want people to know about you and your thoughts (and why keep a blog otherwise?), then you should be able to appreciate why people like the idea of "being on slashdot"

Being slashdotted is fine. But can we just somehow destroy their comments section ?

I do appreciate why people like the idea of "being on slashdot" - it's for the 5 minutes of fame. It's an achievement that they can be proud of and that their peers recognise.
My point wasn't that there was something better to win, but that I find it interesting that most people want to win something that most other people aren't interested in.
My post, and this reply, is just an obvious statement of fact. People aren't interested in things they aren't interested in.
Perhaps I shouldn't have included the bafta analogy at all, but writing the post made me think of a cartoon that quoted it and it amused me. I just wish I could remember the cartoon - probably simpsons or family guy.
